New Year’s Eve Style Guide - Sustainable Edit
I continue to feel baffled at where the time has gone this year…it seems to have flown by faster than any year before. For me, it has been a year filled with house moves, career changes, health developments both mental and physical and a blurry, blissful summer travelling to Barcelona, Paris, New York and South of France while in between jobs. So as 2022 comes to a close, it feels only right to curate a list of some NYE looks as we ring in 2023.
Now I have to put my hands up and admit that while I started with the intention of buying ‘nothing new in 2022’, I didn’t quite fulfil the assignment. However looking on the positive, what I have done is buy 90% of clothes secondhand, swapped out unsustainable brands for more planet conscious ones and have continued to give my existing wardrobe another lease of life whether that’s through renting via By Rotation (my particular favourite as they accept vintage pieces), or reselling on Depop, Ebay, Vestiaire Collective and Vinted. So here we go, a short and sweet curation of NYE worthy lewks created from some of my favourite 2022 vintage purchases paired with some pieces from my favourite sustainable brand, Reformation. Reformation, has a rating of ‘Good’ on Good on You, an unbiased platform which ranks brands with regards to their sustainability efforts focusing on three main areas; the planet, people and animals. By incorporating the use of eco-friendly materials, reusing deadstock material and setting a greenhouse emission reduction target, Reformation is a great brand for those occasional purchases.
THE POWER PLAY
The one and only suit I own remains at the heart of my most valued treasures. It is everything a suit should be, neither subtle nor quiet but loud, over the top and oh so glamorous. Enter a feather trimmed, embossed matching black suit from Simone Rocha sourced from one of my favourite vintage spots, Storm in a Teacup which you can find in our East & Central London Vintage Guide. This makes for the perfect NYE look if you need full glamour. It’s boyish in fit so not one if you’re looking to define those curves, but a great look for those wanting something smart, cool and a little different.
Paired with preloved Prada shoes sourced from The Real Real.
THE COOL GIRL
If ‘cool girl’ Andie from ‘How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days’, a trend addressed by British Vogue recently, was a look she would be this. Cool, calm, collected and a bit like you don’t give a sh*t.
I’ve paired an organic cotton tee from Reformation with vintage Levi’s jeans sourced from Rokit in Covent Garden with my favourite ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ sparkly shoes from a By Far sample sale and some obligatory sparkling earrings I fished out from an old jewellery box. And for when one ventures into the cold night to watch the sky brighten and sparkle at midnight, I’ve paired the look with an old season Jigsaw coat in Olive green.
SMART/ CASUAL
The dreaded dress code that gives no guideline, exudes ambiguity and keeps its victims forever in the dark…I, for one, prefer to air on the side of caution and tend to dress more towards smart than casual. So here I have paired by favourite vintage Levi’s with a beautiful silk top from Reformation in Rust colour. With an unusual colour and design I thought it brought something a little different to the table. Paired with my NYE worthy sparkly shoes and similarly on brand earrings, we have your ‘Smart/ Casual’ look down.
VELVET DREAM
Time to step it up…enter velvet. This dress deserves to be the main event so take her out on the town, take her dancing until the early hours, take her to that beautiful country getaway, take her anywhere that gives her the attention she deserves.
A sexy, sustainable, ‘off the shoulder’ velvet dress from Reformation in rich chocolate is the perfect show stopping NYE look. Pair it with whatever you want, it doesn’t matter.
Available to rent via ByRotation (millawood)!
GLITZY & GLAM
Finally a classic look that always pulls through on NYE…sparkles sparkles and more sparkles. Here I’ve paired a vintage beaded sparkly cami with delicate straps from Rellik Vintage, with Alexander Wang tight black trousers, sparkly shoes and earrings. Finally with an oversized secondhand Balmain men’s jacket thrown over the top to keep the look cool and not too ‘put together’.
